The KMRL Board of Directors has granted approval for a feasibility study. As the next step, a detailed project proposal will soon be submitted to the state government.

Kochi: Kerala’s first-ever light tram project is set to take shape, with Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) seeking the state government’s nod to begin preliminary work. Modelled on international systems, the proposed light tram aims to connect various parts of Kochi, enhancing intra-city mobility. The KMRL Board of Directors has granted approval for a feasibility study. As the next step, a detailed project proposal will soon be submitted to the state government.
Central Government assistance is required to carry out the feasibility study. However, the proposal can only be forwarded to the Centre after receiving the state government’s approval. A detailed project plan will be developed based on the outcomes of the feasibility assessment.
Preliminary evaluations suggest that a 6.2-kilometre stretch from MG Road Metro Station to Thevara, via High Court Junction, Menaka and Jos Junction, can accommodate the light tram service. Last year, a delegation from Hess Green Mobility — the firm that has implemented light trams in cities including Brisbane, Australia — visited Kochi to hold discussions with KMRL and assess potential sites for the project. Following these discussions, KMRL decided to formally seek approval for conducting the feasibility study.
Cost-effective, metro-style connectivity
One of the key advantages of the light tram system is its flexibility — it can operate at road level, underground or on elevated tracks similar to a metro. The Kochi plan is specifically intended to provide service in areas currently not covered by the metro. Similar in function to traditional tram services, each light tram will consist of three coaches, with a total length of 25 metres and a capacity to carry up to 240 passengers. Another major advantage is that the construction cost is remarkably lower compared to that of metro systems.
