Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall and strong winds across various parts of Kerala on Saturday, issuing yellow alerts in nine districts.

The warning comes as part of a five-day weather forecast indicating intensified monsoon activity over the state, especially in central and northern regions.

The districts under yellow alert today include Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Rainfall in these areas could range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours, which qualifies as 'heavy rain' under IMD's classification. Winds are expected to blow at speeds of 40–50 kmph in isolated places, with the risk continuing until July 15.

Officials warn that strong winds are among the most dangerous weather phenomena in Kerala, often leading to casualties and property damage due to uprooted trees and fallen branches. Residents are advised to avoid standing under trees or parking vehicles in open areas during windy and rainy conditions.

In the latest short-term forecast, isolated moderate rain and strong winds (up to 40 kmph) are expected over the next three hours in districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and parts of Central and North Kerala.

The yellow alert will extend tomorrow (July 13) in Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, and on July 14 in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Sea conditions remain rough along the Kanyakumari coast, with high waves up to 3.1 metres and potential sea erosion. Although there are no fishing restrictions for the Kerala, Karnataka, or Lakshadweep coasts today, fishermen and coastal residents are urged to remain vigilant.

The IMD continues to monitor the monsoon developments closely and will issue updates as required.
