Thiruvananthapuram: In a unique effort to encourage greater participation among young voters, first-time electors casting their votes in the April 9 Assembly elections in Kerala will be given halwa at select polling booths.

The initiative has been introduced as part of a wider campaign to boost youth engagement in the democratic process.

‘Vote sweetened Kerala campaign’ announced

Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U Kelkar has unveiled a special drive titled ‘Vote Sweetened Kerala Campaign’. The move is aimed at motivating first-time voters to actively participate in the upcoming polls. An official order outlining the initiative was issued on March 29.

Distribution plan across polling booths

As per the directive, specially packaged halwa will be distributed to new voters at selected polling stations across various districts. The initiative is designed to make the voting experience more welcoming and memorable for young participants.

The order specifies that 200 packets of halwa will be sent to the offices of District Election Officers. These officers will then decide which polling booths will be included in the programme.

Role of officials and volunteers

Booth Level Officers, along with volunteers, will be tasked with identifying first-time voters and overseeing the distribution of the halwa packets at the designated booths. Their role will be crucial in ensuring that the initiative runs smoothly.

Guidelines to ensure smooth conduct of polls

The directive clearly states that the distribution of halwa must not interfere with the voting process. If required, additional volunteers may be deployed to support Booth Level Officers in carrying out the task efficiently.

Documentation for awareness

District Election Officers have also been instructed to arrange brief photographic or video documentation of the distribution process. This material will be used for awareness and reporting purposes, according to the order.
