Beypore: The registration survey process of all inland mechanised vessels including houseboats in Kerala, will now be conducted exclusively through an electronic portal. This initiative, developed for quick and transparent registration, will commence on August 1.

Boats registered via the portal will receive a unique QR code, and another QR code will be issued to passengers and inspection officers. This code can be used to access detailed information about the boat, including passenger capacity.

Following the Tanur boat accident, this portal is part of a series of measures by the government, led by the Kerala Maritime Board, to enhance the safety of vessels and curb illegal activities. Kerala is the first state to implement such an online system.

Efforts are also underway to transfer the registration details of existing vessels to the portal. Subsequent annual surveys for these vessels will also be conducted through this system.

Once fully operational, the portal will facilitate the easy identification and seizure of illegal vessels. To further enforce regulations, the Kerala Maritime Board will deploy speedboats next month.

Arrangements to digitise other activities in this sector are nearing completion.

Kerala Maritime Board Chairman N.S. Pillai said, "with the completion of these measures, illegal activities in this region will be eliminated, and boat accidents will be avoided."
