Kochi: Kerala is extending support to the Gulf nation of Oman in developing its fishing sector. Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) boats suitable for deep-sea fishing will be manufactured and supplied by Kerala to that gulf country.
The initiative is being undertaken by the Ministry of Fisheries, Oman, in collaboration with the Indo-Gulf and Middle East Chamber of Commerce (INMECC).
In the first phase, 100 boats will be built according to Oman’s specifications. The construction will be carried out by Samudra Shipyard, a company based in Aroor. Other Kerala-based companies have also expressed willingness to collaborate with the project.
Despite being a nation rich in marine resources and possessing a coastline of approximately 3,200 kilometres, studies have found that Oman lags behind in fishing infrastructure, including sufficient harbours and fishing equipment. Recognising this gap, Oman has sought the assistance of Kerala, which is known for its expertise in the fisheries sector.
The move to manufacture FRP boats emerged from discussions between INMECC and the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA).
“Oman is looking forward to these Kerala-built boats with great hope,” said INMECC founder chairman N M Sharafudeen.
Most of the boats currently in use in Oman are suited only for one-day fishing trips. The boats being supplied by Kerala will be capable of staying out at sea for up to three days and conducting extended fishing operations. The boats will be 10 to 15 metres in length and have a storage capacity of over six tonnes. They will also accommodate more than 15 workers and enable large-scale fishing operations.
Oman’s marine wealth includes highly demanded species such as sardines (mathi), a staple in Oman), as well as other varieties like catla, rohu, mackerel (ayala), barracuda (ayakoora) and pomfret (avoli).
The project is also expected to increase employment opportunities, including for Malayalis residing in Oman.
