Idukki district registered the fewest annual births in Kerala, dropping to 8,368 in 2024 from 10,864 in 2021. The figure reflects a steady decline over four years, despite the state-wide peak in 2022, Assembly data shows.
Statewide annual trends
The 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly, during its 14th Session, received district-wise annual birth figures for 2021–2024. Minister M.B. Rajesh, presented the reply on September 30 (Tuesday), in response to question by MLA KP Mohanan.
Kerala’s total registered births were:
- 2021: 4,13,766
- 2022: 4,42,348
- 2023: 3,93,038
- 2024: 3,44,766
The data shows a clear rise in 2022 followed by a steady decline through 2024.
District-wise highlights
Apart from Idukki, Wayanad and Pathanamthitta had low numbers.
Malappuram topped the registrations, peaking at 92,809 in 2022 and falling to 73,456 in 2024. Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram were next highest, with peaks of 46,807 and 38,119 respectively.
Ernakulam rose sharply from 29,488 in 2021 to 39,467 in 2022, then declined to 29,810 by 2024. Kannur increased to 35,927 in 2022 from 30,830 in 2021 and dropped to 28,151 in 2024. Thrissur recorded a steady fall from 38,486 in 2021 to 28,704 in 2024.
Overall decline
Most districts reflected the 2022 peak followed by consistent decline. Kottayam fell from 21,064 in 2022 to 16,626 in 2024, and Kasargod from 18,693 to 14,345. The trend indicates a gradual reduction in annual birth registrations across Kerala.
