Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Kerala is set for a spell of intense rainfall over the coming week as weather systems over the Arabian Sea continue to intensify conditions across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on June 7 (Sunday) that widespread rain is likely to persist for at least the next three days.

A cyclonic circulation positioned over the east-central Arabian Sea is driving moisture-laden winds towards the coast, resulting in heavy to very heavy showers across several districts.

Orange alert issued in seven districts

An orange alert has been issued for seven districts on June 7 (Sunday), covering Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. The warning indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall between 12 cm and 20 cm in a 24-hour period.

A yellow alert is in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Wayanad, where heavy rainfall ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm is expected. Authorities have urged residents in alert districts to remain vigilant as rainfall activity continues through the day.

Northern districts likely to see peak rainfall early next week

Forecasts indicate that the focus of heavy rainfall may shift towards northern Kerala on June 8 (Monday) and June 9 (Tuesday), with Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur expected to receive the most intense spells during this phase.

While rainfall intensity is likely to reduce slightly later in the week, isolated heavy showers are expected to continue across parts of the state until June 13 (Saturday).

Fishermen warned as winds strengthen along coast

Strong winds accompanying the system remain a concern, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph along coastal areas. Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Kerala coast until at least June 9 (Monday).

Ports across the state have been instructed to hoist cautionary signals as sea conditions remain rough.

Risk of flooding, landslides and travel disruption

The sustained rainfall raises the risk of flash floods, landslides and uprooted trees in vulnerable areas. Residents have been advised to avoid weak structures and stay away from riverbanks due to possible sudden rises in water levels.

Travel disruptions are expected, particularly in low-lying areas, where waterlogging and falling branches may affect road movement. Lightning activity also remains a concern, with officials advising people to take shelter during storm conditions.

Possible school and college closures

Educational institutions in areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall may be closed if district authorities issue official orders. Students and parents have been advised to rely only on updates from district collectors’ official social media handles or notifications from school and college authorities for confirmation.
