IMD predicts light rain and thundershowers across all Kerala districts for March 18-19, 2026. Stay updated with the latest district-wise weather alerts here.

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory for Kerala, predicting widespread light to moderate rainfall across the state over the next 48 hours. While the summer heat has been intensifying, residents can expect temporary relief as thundershowers are likely to hit several regions today and tomorrow, March 18 and 19, 2026.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, a specific warning has been issued for the northern and central districts. Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are expected to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
Weather officials have warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph in these isolated pockets. Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions against lightning and falling trees or power lines due to the sudden increase in wind velocity.
Statewide green alert: Light rain expected
In a rare occurrence for mid-March, the IMD has placed all 14 districts of Kerala, from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod, under a Green Alert. This signifies that while major flooding or heavy downpours are not anticipated, light rain is very likely on Wednesday and Thursday.
The districts included in the statewide rain forecast are:
- South Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha.
- Central Kerala: Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur.
- North Kerala: Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod.
Extended forecast for Southern Districts
While the northern districts may see a dry spell after Thursday, southern Kerala is expected to see lingering moisture. The IMD has extended the Green Alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam for the following days, indicating that light intermittent showers may continue through the weekend.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged the public to stay alert during thunderstorms and avoid staying in open areas or near water bodies when lightning is observed. Farmers are also advised to protect harvested crops from the sudden showers.
