Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an extended spell of rain and thunderstorms across Kerala, with intermittent heavy showers likely to persist over the next week.

According to the latest IMD forecast, Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-50 kmph over the coming days. The weather activity is likely to continue for the next seven days, with conditions favourable for heavy rainfall at isolated places.

The forecast places Kerala among the key southern states likely to witness sustained wet weather, alongside Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka, where similar thunderstorm activity has been predicted through early next week.

The authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially during thunderstorms and strong winds, and to follow safety guidelines issued by local administrations.

The IMD also indicated that heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal in the coming days, while parts of south interior Karnataka may experience intense showers between May 7 and 9.

Meanwhile, northern parts of the country are expected to witness a separate wet spell, with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast across several states between May 5 and 11.
