Thiruvananthapuram: Parking fees at railway stations across the state are set to increase. The Railways has decided to revise the parking charges, with an increase ranging from 20% to 30%. The decision was made in February, and the hike has already been implemented at Kazhakuttam railway station in Thiruvananthapuram.
As per the revised rates, the base fare for two-wheelers is Rs 10 for up to 2 hours, Rs 20 for 2 to 8 hours and Rs 30 for 8 to 24 hours. For autos and cars, the corresponding rates are Rs 30, Rs 50 and Rs 80. Monthly parking charges for two-wheelers will now be Rs 600. In addition, a separate fee of Rs 10 will be charged for keeping helmets in storage. The new rates will soon come into effect at various railway stations.
The last revision of railway parking fees was in 2017. Previously, charges were levied based on revenue categories. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram Central, Kozhikode and Ernakulam railway stations were among the major stations classified under this system. This categorisation will now see changes.
Currently, under the Amrit Bharat scheme, 34 railway stations across Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions are undergoing renovation at a cost of over Rs 300 crore. Many of these stations fall under NSG (Non-Suburban Grade) categories four and five, where the revised parking fees will also be applicable. Also, in some high-revenue stations not covered under the Amrit Bharat scheme, the Railways has introduced improved parking and other facilities, leading to further fee increases.
Parking receipts will be issued through a printing system, ensuring accurate records of the number of vehicles parked.
Meanwhile, Railway officials stated that this is the first hike in eight years and that only a reasonable increase has been implemented. They also emphasised that enhanced facilities have been introduced at stations for the benefit of passengers.
