Kozhikode: A comprehensive survey is being rolled out across all public schools in Kerala, modelled after the National Achievement Survey (NAS). Known as the State Educational Achievement Survey (SEAS), it will evaluate students from Classes III to IX during the next academic year. The initiative stems from the observation that students in Kerala’s public schools are underperforming in national-level competitive examinations.

To aid preparation, schools will conduct model tests and weekly assessments from June to December.

Kerala previously participated in the NAS in 2017, 2021, and 2024, with the survey conducted in selected schools across the state. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) designed the format, question pattern, and evaluation process, with support from Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) in its execution.

Findings from past NAS rounds revealed that Kerala students require academic quality upgrades, particularly in mathematics, science, and language. The NAS was conducted in Classes III, V, VIII, and X in 2017 and 2021, while in 2024, it covered Classes III, VI, and IX. The insights from the evaluation prompted the decision to extend the upcoming SEAS to all students from Classes III to IX.

The Department of General Education will lead the initiative in coordination with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and SSK. Specialised study materials will be distributed to help students prepare, and 'SAAS' model questions will be integrated into quarterly and half-yearly examinations.

To ensure comprehensive support, schemes will be introduced at the panchayat and district levels, focusing on schools with lower performance. An integrated support framework will be put in place, connecting the general education system with District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), Block Resource Centres (BRCs), local bodies, and school committees.
