Wayanad, Kerala: The track at the State Masters’ Athletics meet came alive Tuesday as Sister Sabina, a former teenage athletics star, ran and jumped over hurdles in her religious attire, barefoot. Spectators cheered, rushing forward to shout, “Sister, congratulations!” after she finished first.

Years had passed since Sister Sabina last competed, but she chose the Masters event to mark a special moment. Competing in the 55-plus age category, she once again displayed the agility and spirit that had made her a star in her youth. She teaches physical education at Dwarka UP School.

A journey from youth to teaching

Sister Sabina first made her mark in athletics while studying in Class 9, competing nationally in hurdles. During her college years, she continued to shine in inter-university competitions. Later, she focused on teaching and took part in fewer competitions.

A final race before retirement

“Next March, I am retiring from my role as a physical education teacher. I wanted to compete one last time before retiring, which is why I came to the State Masters meet,” she said. Her decision paid off when she won a gold medal in her very first race at the meet.

Photos and videos of her race have already emerged on social media, drawing admiration from viewers across Kerala.

Roots and community life

Sister Sabina hails from Ennappara in Kasaragod and moved to Wayanad in 1993. She is now a member of the Dwarka Provincial House’s worship centre, balancing her community work with her passion for athletics.
