Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set for the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon around June 4, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across several districts over the coming week. Orange Alerts have been issued in multiple districts as rain activity is expected to intensify.
According to the latest IMD forecast, conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the monsoon to advance into Kerala, Lakshadweep, parts of Tamil Nadu, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal around June 4. The development comes amid widespread rainfall activity already being reported across southern India.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala during the next six to seven days, with isolated locations likely to receive extremely heavy rain between June 2 and June 8. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected in several districts.

Weather officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas, including landslide-prone and low-lying regions, to remain alert and closely follow updates issued by local authorities.

The monsoon system is also expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
In the Northeast, Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rain from June 3 to June 8, while Assam and Meghalaya could witness intense showers from June 5 onwards.
The weather system is being influenced by multiple cyclonic circulations currently active over the southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala coast, the Bay of Bengal, Assam, East Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and adjoining regions.
The IMD said rainfall activity is expected to intensify further as the monsoon advances northward. In the past 24 hours, Lakshadweep recorded extremely heavy rainfall, while parts of East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat also reported heavy showers.
