Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the likeliness of heavy rainfall across Kerala till November 28. The weather agency has also issued yellow and orange alerts for several districts.

IMD release said that a cyclonic circulation lies over interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala. It extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. Another cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over the South Andaman Sea and the neighbourhood around November 25. “Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area is likely to form over South Andaman Sea & neighbourhood around 26th November. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Andaman Sea around 27th November,” the release noted.

According to IMD, rain or thundershowers are most likely to occur in most places in Kerala from November 22 to 24. Similarly, many places in the state are likely to witness rain from November 25 to November 28.  

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Palakkad and Idukki districts on November 22.  Both districts are on orange alert for the day.

The districts on yellow alert are as follows:

  • November 22: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad Malappuram, Kozhikode,Wayanad
  • November 23: Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Wayanad
  • November 24: Ernakulam

IMD has predicted that thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty winds, speed reaching 30-40 Kmph, is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from November 22 to 24. Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on November 25 and 26, it added. 

The heavy rains on Tuesday had inconvenienced the thousands of devotees trudging up to the hill-top shrine of Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala in Pathanamthitta district as part of a pilgrimage during the two-month long annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku period.

The rains had also led to flooding of many roads and hilly areas of Thiruvananthapuram district.
