Kerala joins 12 states in the Central Government’s leptospirosis prevention initiative, with NHM support to improve diagnosis, treatment and control of rat fever during the rainy season.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has been included in the programme for 'Prevention and Control of Leptospirosis' launched by the Central Government. The initiative aims to strengthen the diagnosis and treatment of leptospirosis (rat fever) in states where the disease is regularly reported.
The Centre has directed 12 states, including Kerala, along with the Union Territories of Andaman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu, to launch leptospirosis prevention plans.
The Central Government has decided to provide technical and financial support through the National Health Mission (NHM) to assist states in implementing their prevention strategies.
The Central Health Ministry has noted that the spread of leptospirosis in Kerala is linked to the six-month rainy season, which increases the risk of transmission.
