Influenza has claimed 77 lives among 6,650 cases in Kerala this year, with H1N1 and H3N2 spreading rapidly amid the monsoon.

Alappuzha: Influenza viruses, which spread through the air, can become more dangerous during the monsoon season. In Kerala, 10 people have died among 604 reported influenza cases in the past week. H1N1 and H3N2 strains have affected most patients. Poor adherence to social distancing and failure to wear masks during the rainy season are cited as major factors contributing to the spread.
The disease could spread further if adequate precautions are not taken, including in relief camps. Changes in weather conditions, along with genetic variations in the viruses, have also contributed to the spread. So far this year, 77 people have died among 6,650 reported influenza cases in the state. Influenza has recorded the highest number of deaths in the Health Department’s infectious disease list, surpassing leptospirosis and dengue.
