Kerala has lowest rate of domestic violence, shows survey report

Kottayam: It has come to light that Kerala reports the lowest number of domestic violence incidents. This was found in a report prepared by International Institute for Population Science in 2019-20 for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The information regarding the status of woman aged between 18 and 49 years was included in the report.

The survey was conducted prior to this in 2015-16. Then the rate of domestic violence in Kerala was 14.9 percent. This has reduced to mere 9.9 percent in the survey held in 2019-20. There are very few states that has less than 10 percent of domestic violence rate. The rate in other states are like this: Karnataka – 44, Bihar – 40, West Bengal – 27, Andhra Pradesh – 30, Maharashtra – 25 and Gujarat – 14.

The survey also evaluated that Kerala is also very forward in the status of living of women and children. The state has the lowest infant mortality rate too. Among the 22 states included in the survey, only Kerala has less than 5 percent infant mortality rate.

Kerala also tops in case of the lowest child marriage rate. Only 6.3 percent child marriages take place in Kerala whereas Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka reported over 20 percent. In 2016, the sex ratio in Kerala was 1049 women for 1000 men. This has increased to 1121/1000. The increase in number of women is considered as a change in the society’s attitude to them.
