Thiruvananthapuram: The government is considering a further probe into the disruption of the 2024 Pooram festival, following the recommendation of the Home Secretary.

Earlier, a report submitted by ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar implicated the Thiruvambadi Devaswom and Thiruvananthapuram Police Commissioner Ankit Ashokan. This report outlined events related to the disruption of the Pooram festival but primarily highlighted certain issues within the police.

Initially, the DGP presented Ajith Kumar's report to the Chief Minister, recommending a further inquiry. It seems the DGP was not willing to fully endorse ADGP's report; he included a dissenting note and subsequently handed it over to the Home Secretary.

After a detailed review, the Home Secretary supported this recommendation, prompting the government to issue an order for an additional investigation.

Ajith Kumar was responsible for coordination and oversight during the festival. The report indicates that he displayed significant lapses in these roles, as he failed to intervene effectively despite the potential for disturbances.

It is worth noting that Ajith Kumar faces allegations of supporting the RSS to disrupt the Pooram festival in order to benefit the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections. Both Congress and the CPM have backed these allegations, with Congress also claiming there is a deal between the CPM and the BJP, with Ajith Kumar acting as a middleman.

Meanwhile, to investigate the shortcomings of ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar, a new team is likely to be appointed, led by an officer of the rank of ADGP. The Chief Minister has also received a separate report from the DGP concerning Ajith Kumar's shortcomings.

The government is weighing two types of inquiries: a Crime Branch investigation and a judicial inquiry. Additionally, the formation of a special investigation team under the DGP's leadership is also under consideration.

The DGP’s report is not solely based on the findings of ADGP Ajith Kumar; it also incorporates insights from the Special Branch, which were presented to the Chief Minister during a Cabinet meeting prior to seeking legal advice.
