Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government has approved 74 additional tourist destinations for the establishment of beer and wine parlours, as well as bars, marking a massive expansion of the Tourism Destination Challenge. This decision is aimed at enhancing tourism infrastructure across the state.

The new list, issued by the Tourism Department, includes popular tourist spots like Ponmudi (Thiruvananthapuram), Poovar (Thiruvananthapuram), Kappil (TVM), and Ilaveezhapoonchira (Kottayam), along with the Chief Minister's constituency, Dharmadam (Kannur). These locations join the 14 existing major tourist destinations, such as Kovalam, where liquor licences have already been granted.

The government claims that this move will help increase the infrastructure needed for tourists. The initiative forms part of the wider Tourism Destination Challenge aimed at promoting tourism in Kerala.

Excise exemptions, hotel licensing

The order was issued by state's Tax Department, which allows for exemptions for liquor shops in the newly included tourist areas. The Excise Department will issue the necessary licences to establish liquor outlets. Two-star hotels in these areas will also be eligible for parlour licences, while only three-star hotels will qualify for bar licences in other locations.
