Five-star toddy shops with dining and family facilities coming to Kerala’s tourist hubs. Private firms and hotels invited to participate

Thiruvananthapuram: Five-star toddy shops will come up in 74 tourist destinations across the state. The Kerala Toddy Industry Development Board has invited expressions of interest to start a restaurant-cum-toddy parlour. The move is in line with the government’s new liquor policy.
The initiative will begin with private participation. Licenses will be issued to those who provide basic facilities. It will differ from the current toddy shop license. The decision is to sell bottled toddy in modern restaurants. Four- and five-star hotels, as well as new entrepreneurs, can apply.
The existing distance rule for toddy shops will be applicable. However, the government is considering relaxing it, as has been done for bars. A specific area, with a separate entrance, must be designated for toddy sales. Toddy should be served only to adults, and it must remain separate from family restaurants. Serving toddy in other sections is prohibited.
Additionally, there should be a playground for the children of visiting families. Facilities for the display and marketing of coconut products will be set up in front of the parlour. Products unique to the region, such as Balaramapuram handlooms, can also be sold.
The license will be valid for five years. The fees and excise regulations for toddy sales are in the final stages of formulation. A permit will be required for importing and selling toddy. The plan to start in 74 locations has gained traction after the government recently expanded the list of recognised tourist destinations.
