Kerala will launch India’s first light-and-sound show inside a tunnel at Chilakoor near Varkala, using video mapping to present the state’s history and Sree Narayana Guru’s teachings.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to unveil India’s first light-and-sound show staged inside a tunnel at the Chilakoor Tunnel near Varkala.
The immersive attraction, which presents Kerala’s history and highlights the teachings of saint and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, is scheduled to be launched on February 26.
According to an official statement, the show will use advanced video mapping technology to project visuals directly onto the tunnel’s interior, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the renovated Chilakoor Tunnel.
The tunnel’s restoration has been completed under the first phase of the Akkulam–Chettuva Waterway project. Spanning 280 km, the Akkulam–Chettuva stretch forms part of the larger 616-km Kovalam–Bekal waterway initiative, which aims to strengthen Kerala’s inland navigation network, enhance its role as a multi-modal logistics hub, and promote water-based tourism.
The renovation was carried out by Kerala Waterways Infrastructure Limited (KWIL), a joint venture between the Kerala government and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL).
As part of the launch, CIAL will introduce a specially designed electric tourist boat integrated with a synchronised light-and-sound system, allowing passengers to enjoy the visual presentation while travelling through the tunnel.
Developed at an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 crore, the show will feature 3D projections showcasing Kerala’s scenic beauty, key milestones in its literary evolution, renowned cultural figures, and diverse traditions.
A six-minute segment dedicated to the life and philosophy of Sree Narayana Guru will serve as the centrepiece of the presentation.
Students and faculty from RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Thripunithura, have contributed illustrated sequences depicting Guru’s journey, which have been animated using cutting-edge mapping techniques.
Tourism officials believe the combination of the tunnel show and electric boat ride will elevate Chilakoor Beach into a distinctive attraction, giving a significant boost to Kerala’s water tourism sector.
The 20-seater electric vessel, built by Kochi-based startup NavAlt Green Mobility, is equipped with high-intensity laser projectors, a modern onboard sound system, and battery-powered propulsion to ensure an eco-friendly and fully synchronised experience.
In addition, KWIL is developing supporting infrastructure, including a beach park and boat jetty, while the Kerala Hydel Tourism Centre will manage ticketing facilities.
Stretching 350 metres, the Chilakoor Tunnel is regarded as a notable engineering achievement originally designed to facilitate seamless inland water transport in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore.
The canal connected to the tunnel has now been restored for navigation as part of Kerala’s broader inland waterways development programme.
