The Chelakkara Assembly by-election in Kerala, a highly anticipated contest, concluded with U R Pradeep of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) securing a decisive victory on Saturday. Following the completion of the vote count, Pradeep emerged with a lead of over 12,000 votes. From the outset of the counting process, he held a steady lead, beginning with 1,890 votes in the first round and gradually widening his margin in each subsequent round.
Chelakkara, in Thrissur district, had been under the LDF's control for the last 28 years. Known for its vibrant agricultural economy and cultural landmarks like Kerala Kalamandalam and Kuthampully handloom village, the constituency has traditionally favoured the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The by-election was necessitated after K Radhakrishnan vacated the seat to join the Lok Sabha.
Intense contest with key players
The LDF fielded U R Pradeep, who previously won the seat in 2016, against Congress candidate and former MP Ramya Haridas. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), represented by K Balakrishnan, added another dimension to the race.
For Congress, the by-election was a crucial opportunity to reclaim the constituency. Haridas, despite losing to Radhakrishnan in the Alathur Lok Sabha election in April, had managed to significantly reduce his lead in Chelakkara, sparking hopes of a revival. However, internal dissent within the Congress, including resistance to Haridas’ candidacy, posed challenges.
Stakes for the LDF
The LDF viewed retaining Chelakkara as vital, given it was the only seat held by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) among the three Kerala bypolls. Losing the constituency would have marked a setback for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who had personally campaigned to retain the seat.
High voter turnout
The by-election, held on November 13, witnessed a voter turnout of 72.77%. Despite the BJP’s efforts to influence the race, the LDF’s dominance appears unshaken, reaffirming its grip on Chelakkara.
