Janata Dal's candidate Saryu Roy achieved a significant win in the Jamshedpur West seat in Jharkhand, securing 1,03,631 votes. INC'sBanna Gupta came in second place with 95,768 votes, and Rashid Hussain got 4787 votes.
The Battle Between Gupta and Roy
The spotlight in this contest was firmly on two veteran politicians: Congress Health Minister Banna Gupta and former Jamshedpur East legislator Saryu Roy, who contested on a Janata Dal (United) ticket. Gupta, a significant figure in the Congress-led government, hoped for re-election by showcasing his key achievements, including the construction of an 851-bed hospital and a Rs 471 crore flyover over the Subernarekha River.
Roy, who gained prominence in 2019 with his victory over former Chief Minister Raghubar Das in Jamshedpur East, made a comeback in his home constituency, Jamshedpur West. His campaign highlighted allegations of corruption against Gupta, with Roy calling for an Enforcement Directorate investigation into Gupta’s assets, particularly those related to his infrastructure projects.
A Complex Contest with Multiple Candidates
The race for Jamshedpur West became even more competitive with the entry of additional candidates. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) fielded Babar Khan, a former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) member, while BJP rebel Vikas Singh also joined the contest. With these new faces, voters had a wider array of choices, each promising to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and essential services like drinking water and electricity.
2019 Election Context and Jharkhand's Political Landscape
In the 2019 elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance, comprising Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), triumphed over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. However, Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s tenure had been overshadowed by corruption allegations, which led to his temporary removal in early 2024. Now back on bail, Soren was seeking a second term amid rising political tensions.
Exit Polls Stir Uncertainty About Jharkhand’s Future
With the results pending, exit polls for the state had created further uncertainty. Predictions were divided, with some indicating a possible win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Janata Dal (United), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Others suggested an advantage for the incumbent JMM-led alliance, which also included Congress, RJD, and CPI(ML).t.
