Kerala CEO Dr Rathan U Kelkar warned of strict criminal action against anyone obstructing Booth Level Officers as voter list verification continues under election laws.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Electoral Officer Dr Rathan U Kelkar has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone obstructing the work of Booth Level Officers (BLOs). He said district collectors have been instructed to ensure that police support is provided whenever BLOs face interference while carrying out their duties. BLOs must be treated as public servants, he told reporters.
Kelkar said the voter list is being verified strictly in accordance with existing election laws and constitutional provisions, and no political party can influence this process. “For the Election Commission, the BLO is the most important officer. They handle all booth-level activities related to elections. The Commission has full responsibility and authority over them,” he said, adding that a significant portion of the SIR processes in the state had been completed due to their efforts.
He noted that there have been instances in some districts where collectors or BLOs have reported attempts to obstruct their work. Reaffirming their status as public servants, he said they hold a crucial role in the electoral process. District collectors have been directed to take strict criminal action against anyone who obstructs or restricts BLOs’ duties.
Kelkar added that action under the IT Act will be taken against those spreading misinformation, making false allegations or carrying out cyberattacks targeting BLOs. He reiterated that police assistance must be provided whenever BLOs encounter any form of obstruction while on duty.
