Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has declared a public holiday on April 9 in view of the Assembly elections, with all government offices and educational institutions across the state set to remain closed.

According to the government order, the holiday will also apply to institutions covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The government has directed private sector employers to grant paid leave to employees on polling day. Employees working outside their respective constituencies will also be eligible for paid leave to enable them to travel and cast their vote. The order further states that the provision applies to temporary staff as well.

Polling in Kerala will be held on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. The elections will also take place on the same day in Assam and Puducherry.
