Kannur (Kerala): SSLC exams will conclude on Wednesday. However, students will not be allowed to engage in unrestricted celebrations due to security concerns. With the risk of student clashes escalating into law and order issues, schools in Kannur have been placed on high alert, particularly on the final days of board examinations. March 26 and 29, when the SSLC and Higher Secondary exams end, have been declared Vigilance Days in the district.
School authorities and police in Kannur and Kozhikode have instructed parents to ensure their children return home immediately after exams. Precautionary measures have also been taken in other areas flagged as potential trouble spots, following government directives.
The heightened caution comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Thamarassery, where a 10th standard student lost his life after a clash at a tuition centre’s farewell event. Concerns over student altercations and rising substance abuse have further prompted strict measures. Last year, violent clashes among students resulted in damage to school property, necessitating police intervention.
In Kannur, police officers, elected representatives and PTA members will be present in schools to monitor the situation. The district administration, led by the district panchayat, had earlier convened a joint meeting with the district legal services authority (DLSA), police, excise department and education department to address the issue. Students have been strictly advised to leave peacefully after exams, avoiding any celebratory gatherings. The government has also directed schools to strengthen their Student Protection Groups.
No room for complacency
Last year, violent incidents occurred on the final exam days, with students clashing and causing damage to school property. Authorities stress that the increasing link between such incidents and drug abuse makes this a serious concern.
"Parents will be held accountable if students cause trouble or damage school property. The goal is to ensure a smooth and peaceful farewell without any incidents," said K V Venugopal, Additional SP, Kannur City.
