Kannur: A man was caught in the act of throwing a mobile phone and narcotic substances into the Kannur Central Jail on Sunday. The Town Police arrested K Akshay (27), of Komban House, near Puthiyatheru Panankavu Sankarankadavu. Two others who were with him managed to escape.

During questioning, the accused admitted to receiving ₹1,000 as payment for each delivery of narcotics into the jail. At around 5 pm. on Sunday, he was spotted by prison staff attempting to hurl a package—containing narcotic substances and a mobile phone—over the wall near the medicinal garden adjacent to the District Jail. The items were tied inside a sack.

While Akshay was apprehended, his two accomplices fled through the rear. Police recovered 22 bundles of beedis, five packets of hans, and one mobile phone. The mobile phone had been securely wrapped in plastic to protect it from damage during the fall. Upon being alerted, the police arrived at the scene and took Akshay into custody. He was later presented in court and remanded.

Incidents involving the recovery of mobile phones and other banned items from inside prison cells have been on the rise. Notably, a mobile phone was seized on the very day the Jail Deputy Inspector General (DIG) visited the facility.

Police believe Akshay is linked to a gang that regularly smuggles prohibited items into the jail. Following his arrest, officers conducted a detailed interrogation. Based on the information he provided, a search was carried out at a rented room in Kakkad Kunhippalli, where additional narcotic substances were recovered. According to police, orders for these items are often placed through the inmates’ friends. It is reported that prisoners of various political affiliations have been receiving such supplies.

Town Police Inspector Sreejith Koderi stated that the investigation has been intensified.
