Kannur: The political atmosphere in Kannur has intensified following the announcement of elections, with developments across major alliances signalling a highly competitive contest. Rapid campaign moves by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), internal dissent within the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and uncertainty in the United Democratic Front (UDF) have collectively shaped a volatile electoral landscape.

LDF begins campaign with aggressive start

The LDF quickly moved into campaign mode by announcing candidates early and launching roadshows across multiple constituencies. Campaign events featuring music and public outreach were organised in several areas, reflecting a strategy aimed at gaining early momentum.

Party leaders believe that this fast-paced approach could be advantageous given the limited campaign window. Except for a few constituencies, LDF candidates are already actively engaging with voters on the ground.

CPM faces rebellion in key constituencies

Despite the strong campaign start, the CPM is facing internal challenges in constituencies such as Payyanur and Taliparamba.

Former party leader V. Kunhikrishnan, who was expelled from the CPM, has announced his decision to contest from Payyanur. The UDF is expected to extend support to his candidature, potentially complicating the contest.

In Taliparamba, senior leader T.K. Govindan has openly expressed dissent over candidate selection. He has criticised state leadership, including M. V. Govindan, and indicated that he may contest as an independent if required. Such open rebellion during an election period is considered unusual in the district, which has traditionally been a CPM stronghold.

These developments are being viewed as potential openings for opposition parties to weaken the CPM’s dominance in the region.

UDF struggles with candidate selection

The UDF is currently facing organisational challenges, with candidate announcements pending in several constituencies. Apart from sitting seats like Irikkoor and Peravoor, decisions in other areas remain unresolved.

The situation has created uncertainty among party workers, who are awaiting clarity on candidates as campaigning gains pace.

In the Kannur Assembly constituency, internal differences have emerged over candidature. Senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran has expressed his intent to contest, leading to delays in final decision-making. Party leadership is reportedly attempting to resolve the issue through internal discussions, recognising the political sensitivity of the situation.

BJP prepares to expand presence

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also entered the fray by announcing candidates in select constituencies. The party is expected to finalise additional names soon, with approvals pending from central leadership.

Preparations for campaigning are already underway, including the establishment of election committee offices across the district.
