A comprehensive look at Kannur’s 2021 election results, highlighting key victories, vote margins, and constituency-wise outcomes

Kannur: Kannur emerged as a key stronghold for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the 2021 Assembly elections, as the alliance delivered a decisive performance across the district. The LDF retained power in the state, winning 99 seats and securing a consecutive term for the first time. In Kannur, the front won nine of the 11 constituencies and reclaimed the Azhikode seat from the United Democratic Front (UDF).
Several leaders recorded landslide victories in CPM strongholds, many with substantial margins. In Mattannur, K.K. Shailaja secured a commanding majority of 60,963 votes. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan won in Dharmadam with a margin of 50,123 votes. T.I. Madhusoodanan triumphed in Payyanur by 49,780 votes, while M. Vijn won in Kalliasseri with a majority of 45,467 votes. A.N. Shamseer secured Thalassery with a margin of 36,801 votes, and M.V. Govindan won in Taliparamba by 22,689 votes.

The LDF also reclaimed Azhikode, where K.V. Sumesh won by 6,142 votes. In Kannur constituency, Kadannappalli Ramachandran retained the seat with a narrow majority of 1,745 votes after a closely contested battle.
Among the UDF victories, K.P. Mohanan of the RJD retained Koothuparamba, winning by 9,541 votes. The opposition alliance also held the hilly constituencies of Irikkur and Peravoor, traditionally considered UDF strongholds. In Irikkur, Sajeev Joseph won by 12,297 votes, while in Peravoor, Sunny Joseph secured victory with a margin of 3,172 votes in a tight contest.
