Thiruvalla: The high-quality ‘Japan Violet’ rice variety has been introduced for cultivation in Upper Kuttanad, marking a significant step in agricultural diversification. Known for its rich nutritional content and robust pest resistance, the variety is being cultivated to expand seed production and cultivate it in other areas.

Violet Rice Grown in Ariyodichal Region

The rice is currently being grown on approximately two and a half acres of land in the Ariyodichal region of Niranam, in Kuttanad. Notably, this marks the first instance of Japan Violet rice being cultivated in the region. The plant’s grains and stems exhibit a distinct violet hue, and the variety originates from Japan. To make it suitable for Kerala’s climate, the seeds were bred in an indigenous manner.

Similarities to Kerala’s Jyothi Rice

The Japan Violet rice bears similarities to Kerala’s popular Jyothi rice. Both varieties share a harvest cycle of 110 days. Known for its minimal pest issues, Japan Violet rice thrives in high-moisture, wetland conditions, providing an opportunity for good yields. Senior Agricultural Officer Matthew Abraham from the State Seed Farm anticipates an average yield of 25 quintals per acre.

Price and Market Expectations

Currently, the price for one kilogram of seed is Rs 50. Commercial cultivation has not yet begun, and thus, the market price for harvested rice remains undetermined. The rice was planted by the farmer group of the Ekatha Farmer Producer Company, affiliated with the Govardhan Nature Farming Promoters' Group. The seeds were sourced from the State Seed Farm. Harvesting is expected to start in the first week of April, when the rice will be approximately 30 days old.
