Malappuram: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Wednesday expressed its concern over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement signalling Union Government's intention to implement Union Civil Code across the country.

Modi on Tuesday signalled the Centre's intention to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and slammed the opposition parties for allegedly stirring minority communities against it.

Responding to the media after a Muslim League National Council meeting, Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal stated that Prime Minister's remark had created panic among the public. He termed Modi's recent move in support of UCC as "anti-constitutional."

"The repercussion would be enormous if such a law is introduced by denouncing the current legal framework. The Muslim League meeting has decided to legally and politically oppose the government's move to implement UCC," he said.

He also criticized Prime Minister for his silence over the ongoing violence in Manipur.

"Muslim League has always opposed UCC. It is not practical to implement it in India. We are a culturally diverse society with varying religious beliefs, practices and underlying laws. Therefore, it is not possible to implement a common law for everyone," Sadiq Ali Thangal said.

He added that Modi regurgitated BJP's agenda on implementing the UCC in the wake of the upcoming general elections in 2024. "Modi is wary of the opposition unity. Despite fielding all tactics, BJP failed to win the Karnataka assembly polls. He fears that the Opposition alliance in Karnataka would be repeated across the country."
