Mannarkkad: A wild elephant, found with leg injuries in Thiruvizhamkunnu in Palakkad, was sent to the forest after administering medication. The wild tusker, which was standing in a private place after being drugged, was chased into the Silent Valley forest only after the sedation completely left.

The wound is on the left hind leg of the ten-year-old elephant. On Sunday, the Forest Department administered drugs and treatment. Later, the officials freed the elephant and tried to chase it into the forest. However, the jumbo wandered around the area for a while and came back.

The forest guards tried hard, but could not chase the elephant as it was in a stupor. The doctor advised that the elephant needs rest. A team of 20 people watched the elephant throughout the night. The Forest Department officials said that the elephant woke up from its slumber at 11 pm, looked healthy and was consuming food. After being observed till 5 am on Monday morning, it was taken to the forest.

At the same time, it is alleged that the Forest Department officials did not consider the demand of the locals to release it to the forest only after reaching a safe place and ensuring further treatment. The people requested this on the grounds that there is a possibility that the injured elephant may return to the residential area.

On Monday, the locals protested against the move to release the elephant to the Ambalapara mountain. Mannarkkad Range Officer N Subair said that there will be an inspection of the Forest Department in the area in the coming days for public safety.

Forest officials also said that a special team has been appointed to monitor the elephant.

This elephant was a constant presence in the residential areas of Ambalapara and Ittavari area for more than a week.
