Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 24-hour-statewide strike on Wednesday in view of the killing of a lady doctor at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. IMA reported that the intensive care units and emergency wings will be exempted from the strike, which will continue till 8 am on Thursday.

House surgeon Vandana Das (23) was stabbed to death by a man who was brought to the hospital for a medical checkup. Accused Sandeep was a school teacher. He stabbed the doctor with scissors kept on a table near him.

The doctors in the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital boycotted services and commenced strike marking protest. The doctors will convene a meeting by noon to discuss the mode of protests.

The doctors in all ESI hospitals in the state have also boycotted service and declared a 24 hours strike under Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA).

“Such incidents lower the morale of doctors to work peacefully with confidence and free spirit,” said IMA state president Dr Sulphi, He condemned the recurring attacks reported against doctors in Kerala.

In March, the Kerala faction of IMA had conducted a similar strike to protest against the increasing cases of attacks against doctors and the lapses on the side of the police to nab the assailants.
