New Delhi: Five higher education institutions in Kerala are among the 89, including three Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), across the country that have been served show-cause notices by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for failing to comply with anti-ragging regulations. The list includes IIT Palakkad and Kerala Kalamandalam.
In a letter dated June 9, the UGC warned that institutions which do not implement the mandated guidelines within 30 days may face strict action, including withdrawal of recognition and funding.
The other institutions in Kerala that received notices are APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University in Thiruvananthapuram, Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University in Malappuram and Sree Narayana Guru Open University in Kollam.
Nationally, notices were also sent to IITs in Bombay, Kharagpur and Hyderabad, and IIMs in Bombay, Rohtak and Tiruchirappalli. Other institutions include AIIMS Raebareli, National Institutes of Design in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, Nalanda University in Bihar, Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh, NIPER Hyderabad, IGNOU, and the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata.
According to UGC’s 2009 anti-ragging guidelines, all higher education institutions must collect undertakings against ragging from both students and their parents at the time of admission each academic year. Institutions must also submit these records to the UGC.
The notices were issued to institutions that failed to comply with these requirements despite repeated reminders.
