Kozhikode: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has harshly criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, claiming that the country is waging war in violation of even the Geneva Convention.
Speaking at the Congress-organized Palestine Solidarity Rally in Kozhikode, the Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram clarified that his remark about happenings in Palestine at the IUML rally was purposely misinterpreted by some people.
"Last month, the Muslim League held a rally here. Even then, I stated that this is not an issue of the Muslim faith. It's more of a human issue. Some people purposefully misrepresented my speech. I state unequivocally that I am always with Palestine," said Tharoor.
"There is an accusation that Congress is not talking about the Israel-Palestine issue because Assembly elections are being held. I want to clarify that during the election campaign, Sonia Gandhi released an opinion piece on the Israel-Palestine war on October 30 and Priyanka Gandhi also spoke about the issue during the election campaign. Modi government's foreign policy is against the decade-old policy followed by India. UN General Assembly passed a resolution on the humanitarian truce in the Israel-Gaza war. Mahatma Gandhi’s country did not vote for it. We abstained from voting," he added.
Meanwhile, IUML state president Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal reiterated his party's commitment to strengthing the UDF front and stated that there is a strong relationship between the Congress and the League.
