Kozhikode: The company authorities have informed that the fuel leak at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) storage facility in Elathur Depot has been resolved. HPCL Regional Manager M.J. Muneer stated that the leakage was caused by a failure in the overflow monitoring system.
A joint inspection by the Pollution Control Board, Disaster Management Department and the Health Department will take place on Thursday. Deputy Collector Anitha Kumari assured that there is no need for public concern and that the issue has been fully addressed.
The incident occurred around 4 pm on Wednesday, when diesel from the storage facility, located near the national highway and railway tracks, began flowing through a nearby drain. It is reported that between 600 to 700 litres of fuel leaked.
Following the fuel spillage, locals gathered at the site in protest. Residents mentioned that similar fuel leaks had occurred in the past. There were concerns that the diesel had flowed into nearby rivers and the sea, with fears that wells could soon become contaminated.
