Thrissur: The hi-tech cameras installed on roads across the state to detect traffic rule violations remain inactive as it awaits final approval from the state cabinet. Reportedly, more than 1000 hi-tech cameras, including 726 AI cameras (ANPR- Automatic Number Plate Recognition), are under the consideration of the state cabinet for approval.
The project, launched in collaboration with KELTRON, cost Rs 236 crores to install cameras. However, the officials estimated that fines collected within the same year of installation would be enough to cover the total cost incurred on the project.
The cameras could have gone operational by September 1, 2022. However, the project was delayed due to faults in the automatic fine notification system and the linking of cameras with traffic control rooms.
Meanwhile, the project sought the cabinet's approval since it aims to impose hefty fines for traffic rule violations.
As part of the project, a control room and a central control room were set up at the enforcement department’s office of MVD in each district.
The project also entailed an efficient mechanism for fine payments wherein an SMS will be sent to the vehicle owner’s mobile phone to alert them about the violations.
