Kozhikode: The Hepatitis B vaccine has been unavailable in several parts of Kerala for over six months, leaving many without the necessary doses. Despite a small shipment arriving last month, the stock ran out quickly, creating a shortage in both government and private hospitals, including primary health centres in Kerala.
The shortage is causing problems, especially for people who received their first dose and now face difficulty getting the follow-up shots required at one month, six months, and five years intervals. Karunya pharmacies in some regions are the only places still offering limited doses, while government hospitals continue to distribute only vaccines for children.

The vaccine shortage has also affected medical students. Hepatitis B vaccination is mandatory for MBBS admission, but students are unable to get their required doses due to the ongoing supply issue. The vaccine is distributed through the National Immunization Mission by the central government, but doctors point to low domestic production as the primary reason for the lack of availability.
Rising jaundice cases in state
Alongside the vaccine shortage, Kerala is witnessing an increase in jaundice cases. As of January 13, a total of 308 people have been confirmed to have jaundice. The shortage is affecting multiple districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kasaragod, Kottayam, and Thrissur.
Despite the growing concern, higher authorities within the state health department have been unable to provide clear answers regarding the availability of the vaccine and when supplies will be restored.
Hepatitis B, its global impact
Hepatitis B, a viral infection that causes liver inflammation, is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, second only to tuberculosis. In 2019 alone, Hepatitis B was responsible for 83 percent of the 1.1 million deaths related to liver disease. The virus is primarily transmitted through blood and bodily fluids, and in the long term, it can lead to serious complications like liver cirrhosis.
