Kozhikode: Despite promises made by Health Minister Veena George in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, the assurance of land allocation for Kerala Medical Services Corporation to set up a drug warehouse in Kozhikode district remains unfulfilled.

The current drug storehouse operates from a rented building of the Koyilandy Taluk Agricultural Marketing Society, located 40 km away from the city, lacking adequate security measures and a fire and rescue service’s no objection letter, as highlighted by the minister in the assembly. This violation of government norms costs the government crores of rupees in rent annually, as confirmed by official documents.

Despite promises of space in the Chevayur Skin Hospital compound and intentions to build a pharmacy facility in the Kozhikode Medical College compound, there has been no progress from the government. Over 50 per cent of drugs distributed through the District Drug Warehouse go to Kozhikode Medical College, making relocation there an efficient solution, easing distribution and reducing costs associated with vehicle hire.

In 2012, funds were allocated for warehouse construction in Alappuzha, Kannur, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts. However, except for Kozhikode district, no warehouse has been established or space made available.

KMSCL Kozhikode has engaged in discussions with the principal and superintendent of Kozhikode Medical College to relocate the godown to the city, receiving a positive response. A project report has been submitted to the National Health Mission (NHM), awaiting approval to resolve the ongoing challenges faced by Kozhikode Medical Services in finding a suitable and secure location for their drug warehouse.
