Guruvayur: Chaos erupted at the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple on New Year’s Day as an uncontrollable surge of devotees overwhelmed security measures. The influx was so immense that many who had joined the queue the previous night were still unable to enter the temple by the following morning.

Security Defences Fail Under Pressure

The crowd eventually surpassed the control of both the local police and temple security personnel. Special provisions for senior citizens, who are typically permitted Darshan between 4:30 am and 6:30 am, proved ineffective; many remained stranded in the crowd as late as 9:00 am.

Frustrated by the lengthy delays, groups of devotees began chanting and shouting in protest, leading to heated confrontations with security staff. The situation escalated when the crowd surged forward, forcing their way toward the sanctum. Under the sheer weight of the push, a barricade near the sacred flagpole (Kodimaram) began to buckle and tilt, requiring staff to secure it hastily with ropes. Several security guards and devotees sustained minor injuries during the commotion.

Suspension of Special Services

The most significant disruption occurred on Thursday morning, north of the eastern flagpole. Order was only partially restored following the conclusion of the morning rituals. Due to the dangerous levels of overcrowding, temple authorities were forced to suspend Neyvilakku (ghee lamp) Darshan and token-based entries.

The queue for entry snaked well beyond the southern corridor, stretching as far as the western corridor. Similar congestion was reported at the Prasada Oottu (temple feast) halls, offering booking counters, and cloakrooms.

Despite the logistical challenges, several prominent figures visited the temple for New Year blessings, including:
