Thiruvananthapuram: Work has commenced at the district level to rectify 323 vulnerable road corridors as part of efforts to enhance road safety in the state. Each district-level expert committee has been allocated Rs. 10 lakh to address safety concerns. This decision forms part of the initial phase of the Road Safety Authority's action plan.

Authorities have pinpointed 'vulnerable' areas with the highest concentration of black spots within stretches of 5 to 10 kilometres. Of these, 149 are situated on national highways, with the remaining 174 on state highways. These spots are among the 4592 black spots identified across the state.

Priority will be given to several measures, including installing safety-warning signs, repairing malfunctioning signal lights, modifying road shoulders for better usage, removing obstructive tree branches, tow away dangerously parked and abandoned vehicles, clearing walkways, restoring handrails, and eliminating obstructive elements such as bunting flags, banners, and boards.

District road safety authorities have also been tasked with submitting detailed plans outlining areas where road widening is necessary, including those requiring land acquisition. Further actions on these roads are slated for the initiative's second phase.
