Thrissur (Kerala): An accident in Thrissur has once again raised concerns about the reliability of Google Maps after a car carrying a family of five plunged into a river on Sunday night.

The incident occurred around 7.30 pm near the Ezhunnallath Kadavu checkdam, which connects the Kondazhy and Thiruvilwamala Panchayats across the Gayathripuzha River.

The family was returning in a car from Kuthampully, having purchased handlooms and other items. The car, following directions from Google Maps, was reportedly guided to drive over the checkdam. While crossing the checkdam, the vehicle fell into the water, landing about 30 meters from the riverbank in approximately five feet of water. However, the family members—Balakrishnan, Sadanandan, Vishalakshi, Rukmini and Krishnaprasad from Malappuram—were unharmed. Their family members in another car, following closely behind, along with local residents, rushed to help. The Pazhayannur Police also arrived at the scene and took the necessary action.

It is worth noting that this area has seen similar accidents in the past, raising concerns about local infrastructure.

Concerns over navigation apps
Meanwhile, the incident has once again raised questions about the reliability of navigation apps, particularly Google Maps, which many drivers trust. Experts warn that while these apps provide turn-by-turn directions, they can miss important details such as unfinished roads, construction zones or restrictions like the prohibition of driving over checkdams.

Experts suggest that users should exercise caution and rely on local knowledge when driving through unfamiliar or underdeveloped areas. Although navigation apps collect real-time data, updates may be slow, and the app’s data might not always be accurate.
