From Pattom Thanu Pillai to Oommen Chandy, Kerala’s political history has seen only a handful of occasions where protests turned violent enough to physically injure chief ministers and ministers

Thiruvananthapuram: Protests are continuing across the state over the alleged attack on Kerala Health Minister Veena George, who sustained injuries to her neck and hand during a Kerala Students' Union black-flag protest at Kannur railway station.
While protests against chief ministers and ministers have happened at various points in Kerala’s political history, instances where they were physically injured have been relatively rare.
On March 4, 1962, then Chief Minister Pattom A Thanu Pillai was injured in the chest when stones were hurled at his car near Ramanilayam in Thrissur during a violent farmers’ march.

On January 4, 1970, an acid bulb was thrown at then home minister CH Mohammed Koya at the inspection bungalow in Thalassery. Later, K. Gangadharan Marar was arrested in connection with the attack. He had earlier served a jail term for assaulting Minister PR Kurup with a hammer in 1962. Marar was also an accused in the 1967 case of stone-pelting at the vehicle of Governor V Viswanathan.

On November 25, 1994, Cooperation Minister MV Raghavan was blocked by DYFI activists at Kuthuparamba. The ensuing confrontation led to police firing, in which five activists were killed.
On January 15, 1995, stones were thrown at the car of Chief Minister K Karunakaran when he arrived for a visit to the Guruvayur temple. A stone struck just below the seat where he was sitting.
In 2013, then chief minister Oommen Chandy suffered two facial injuries and a blow to the chest in stone-pelting by Left Front workers in Kannur. Ministers KC Joseph and T Siddique were also injured in the incident.
