Kozhikode: In a heartwarming display of sustainability and traditional values, Namita and Avinash tied the knot in an eco-friendly wedding ceremony at a wedding hall in the city, which stood as a testament to environmental consciousness. The couple, who meticulously planned every detail of their wedding, ensured that minimal waste was generated, no disposable plastic was used, and nature was honoured at every step.
As part of their commitment to sustainability, the couple refrained from using any animal-derived products. Instead, they served vegan food at the wedding, ensuring no animals were harmed in the preparation of meals. The wedding also minimised waste, with water served in glass bottles and palm leaf straws provided for drinking. Guests were presented with handmade paper pouches filled with spices and local snacks, such as ‘Varuthakaya’ and ‘Sharkara’ upperi.
The venue, including the auditorium, was beautifully decorated with natural materials such as woven leaves, old sarees and native flowers. Namita’s grandfather, the late N. E. Balakrishna Marar, an esteemed figure in the local community, was honoured through embroidery of the couple’s names on a welcome board made from his ‘Veshti’ (cloth). Namita, the daughter of T.B.S. Managing Partner Manoharan and Priya, has always been an advocate for eco-friendly living.
The entire family, including Namita’s parents and elder brother Rohan, were actively involved in making the wedding a sustainable event. The menu featured traditional Kerala delicacies, such as 'Pachadi' and 'Avial' made with peanut curd, as well as 'Payasam' prepared with coconut milk, served in an eco-friendly manner.
The waste generated during the wedding, including plastic covers from products, was sent for recycling. Leftover food was also processed through the venue’s bio-gas plant, ensuring that nothing went to waste.
Namita, who works as a service designer for a government organisation in London, and Avinash, who is part of a Mumbai-based band, not only celebrated their love but also showcased a wedding model that honoured both culture and the environment. The couple’s commitment to a cruelty-free, eco-friendly lifestyle set a new standard for sustainable celebrations in the modern age.
