Thrissur: CPI leader and former minister VS Sunil Kumar has come up with serious allegations against Thrissur mayor MK Varghese, saying that he had worked in favour of NDA candidate Suresh Gopi during the Lok Sabha elections. LDF should take strong action against the mayor who had supported the NDA candidate, demanded Sunil Kumar, who was the LDF candidate at Thrissur in the LS election.
While speaking to reporters at Thrissur on Thursday, Sunil Kumar has said that, MK Varghese had not behaved as the LDF mayor of Thrissur during the election days. “Nor did he take a position helpful for the LDF in the election”, Sunil Kumar said. “I was the MLA of Thrissur and had brought development projects worth Rs.1000 crores. But, instead of highlighting the achievements of LDF candidate, mayor was seen praising the greatness of NDA candidate. I have no intention to disturb the unity in LDF in connection with mayor’s actions,” said Sunil Kumar.
Earlier, CPI district secretary KK Valsaraj too had demanded the expulsion of Varghese from the post of mayor. “Mayor has been continuing with his eulogy of union minister Suresh Gopi. He should be ready to correct himself”, Valsaraj said.
Mayor Varghese had praised Suresh Gopi during the election campaign which had embarrassed the LDF forcing the leadership to step in demanding a correction from him which he duly obliged. In his attempt to justify his stand, mayor had said that, what he said was all the three candidates in Thrissur were equally good and fit for the job.
After the election results, mayor had expressed his full support to Suresh Gopi in his attempts to bring glory to Thrissur. Now, apart from the CPI, a section of the CPM too have come out expressing their displeasure over the statements of mayor which continuously put LDF on the back foot. Some of them have even gone to the extent of saying that the mayor should be expelled at the cost of losing power at the corporation.
Meanwhile, mayor MK Varghese has once agains justified his support of Suresh Gopi by saying that he was only supporting the idea of development.
