Thrissur: Amid ongoing controversy surrounding her selection, Dr Niji Justin was sworn in as the Mayor of the Thrissur Corporation on Friday.
Following the oath-taking ceremony, Congress leaders accorded her a warm reception by draping a shawl and placing a crown on her head.

She was elected with 35 votes, bringing to a close intense political manoeuvring that had been unfolding since morning. Three names were discussed within the Congress for the mayoral post, Lali James, Niji Justin and Subi Babu. Although there were strong indications that Lali James would be chosen, the decision to appoint Niji Justin as mayor was taken unexpectedly by the DCC president.
Meanwhile, the announcement triggered sharp reactions from Congress councillor Lali James, who levelled serious allegations against the party leadership. Amid protests and uncertainty, there were concerns over whether Lali James would participate in the voting process. Ending the suspense, she eventually turned up and cast her vote.

Speaking to the media, Lali James claimed that she was sidelined because she did not have the money demanded by party leaders. She alleged that leaders were approached with “bags of cash” and that financial considerations determined the choice of the mayoral candidate.
She also raised allegations against Niji Justin, reiterating that monetary transactions played a decisive role in the decision.
