Thrissur: In a troubling turn of events, the Kerala Sahitya Akademi is facing a serious financial crisis, causing delays in disbursing the award funds alongside its literary awards. A total of Rs 5.55 lakh, meant for award recipients, has yet to be disbursed due to the acute economic difficulties facing the Akademi.
This marks the first time in the history of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, which was established prior to Kerala Piravi, that it has encountered such severe financial challenges. Last year, while the award funds were also delayed, the money was released within ten days. However, it has now been over fifteen days since the awards ceremony, and the funds remain outstanding.
C.P. Aboobacker , the secretary of the Sahitya Akademi, commented that the financial crisis is the reason for the delay in the award funds. He assured that efforts are being made to resolve the issue swiftly.
The Kerala Sahitya Akademi, a self-governing body, relies on government funding for its operations. The state typically allocates Rs 3 crore annually; however, the ongoing financial strain on the government has adversely affected the Akademi as well.
