Alappuzha: Voters need not worry if any electronic voting machines (EVMs) malfunction during the upcoming local body elections, as more than enough replacement units have been prepared. A total of 9,207 ballot units and 3,305 control units have been allotted for the three-tier panchayats and municipalities.

In comparison, the previous election had only 6,874 ballot units and 2,499 control units. For the 12 blocks and six municipalities in the district, 25 per cent additional machines have been provided. The machines, which have already undergone preliminary checks, are currently stored in the strong room. They will be distributed to the reception and distribution centres at block and municipal levels on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There are 18 such centres in the district, which will also serve as the locations for vote counting.

Candidates’ Names and Symbols to Be Added on 3 December

The names and symbols of candidates will be loaded onto the ballot units on 3 December at the distribution and reception centres. This process will take place after a mock poll, conducted in the presence of representatives from political parties. Once this is completed, the machines will be sent to the polling booths.

Single-Post Machines for Municipalities; Multi-Post for Three-Tier Panchayats

A single-post EVM consists of one control unit and one ballot unit. This type is used for municipalities, where voters cast only one vote. For the three-tier panchayat elections, a multi-post EVM is used, consisting of one control unit and three ballot units to allow voting for the Grama Panchayat, Block Panchayat, and District Panchayat.

If the number of candidates at any level exceeds 15, a second ballot unit will be prepared to accommodate additional names, with candidates from 16 onwards listed on the second unit.
