A Kerala village pays heartfelt tribute to Eldo, a beloved street dog, by installing a clay statue in his memory.

Tripunithura (Kerala): He was lovingly known as Eldo by the locals. A true companion to all, Eldo was more than just a street dog—he was a friend, a familiar face and a quiet presence who had won the hearts of everyone in the neighbourhood. His passing came as a shock to many, and in a moving tribute, the people of the area have now erected a clay statue in his memory.
The memorial stands near the Eroor Kozhivettumveli bus stop, where local auto drivers and residents took the lead in setting up the small structure to honour Eldo. Years ago, he had wandered into the area from somewhere unknown, bearing burn marks on his body and a slight limp. Despite his pain, his gentle eyes and peaceful nature touched everyone he met.
He was never seen as just a stray; Eldo became a part of the community. Children returning home from tuition classes would find him walking alongside them, a quiet guardian. “He would wait at the junction and follow the children to their homes,” recalls Thaikkadan Geevarghese, a local resident. Naturally, he became a favourite among school kids too.
Eldo never fought with other dogs and was known for his calm temperament. The junction was his home, and he’d come running when called. Twice, he was injured in road accidents, but each time, kind-hearted locals like auto driver Sanakan took him to the veterinary hospital for treatment.
Eldo passed away on April 24 this year. His funeral was conducted by the locals, a rare honour for a street dog. In the days that followed, they decided to immortalise him with a clay statue—an everlasting reminder of his quiet companionship.
The statue was crafted by sculptor Jayan V K and his nephew Nibin V G, who together recreated Eldo’s gentle spirit in clay.
Even now, people come to the junction looking for Eldo, some carrying packets of home-cooked food he once loved. Auto drivers—his close friends—used to buy him his favourite milk cake from the nearby Shanmughan Super Stores.
In a world that often overlooks strays, Eldo was cherished. And now, even in his absence, the love he received lives on—etched in clay and carved into the hearts of those who knew him.
