Election Commission on Monday rescheduled assembly by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Kerala from November 13 to November 20 due to upcoming festivals.

In Kerala, all political parties are closely monitoring the Palakkad seat for its political implications. Concerns had been raised about holding the election during the Kalpathi Rastholsavam festival, which will be celebrated from November 13 to 15 in the district. Congress leaders noted that a significant portion of the electorate in the 56-Palakkad assembly constituency would be engaged in the festivities.

Shafi Parampil, MP from Vadakara and former MLA from Palakkad called for the postponement of the by-election date, emphasizing the festival's importance and its attraction for visitors from outside the state. He informed the Election Commission that conducting the election on the same day would create practical difficulties.

LDF convener T.P. Ramakrishnan also expressed concerns, stating that the festival would hinder the smooth voting process.

What is Kalpathi Rastholsavam? 

Kalpathi Rastholsavam is a well-known temple festival celebrated in the village of Kalpathi in the Palakkad district. This annual event features a grand procession, traditional music, dance performances, and cultural activities, attracting large crowds from the local community and beyond. 

One highlight of the festival is the "Kuthirakolam," where intricately decorated horse figures made of colourful paper and flowers are displayed.

Similar concerns have been raised in other poll-bound states. Parties, including Congress, BJP, BSP, and RLD, urged the Election Commission to reschedule the elections due to various festivals, citing potential impacts on voter turnout. 

In Punjab, the 555th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev will be celebrated on November 15, with an 'akhand path' organized from November 13 onward. 

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP, BSP, and RLD noted that people typically travel for three to four days ahead of Kartik Purnima, also on November 15. After addressing these concerns, the Election Commission decided to move the voting date to November 20.
